Deane Chandler Davis (November 7, 1900 - December 8, 1990) was born in East Barre, Vermont. He was the 74th Governor of the U.S. state of Vermont from 1969 to 1973 and a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1948. Before becoming Governor, he worked as a lawyer, county prosecutor, Superior Court judge (1931-36), and president of the National Life Insurance Co. In his retirement he published two books of humorous stories about his experience as a country lawyer. Davis died December 8, 1990. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery, Barre, Vermont. His governorship was particularly noteworthy for the creation of a state sales tax. Davis also oversaw the 1970 enactment of Act 250, a law designed to control development and safeguard the environment, community life, and aesthetic character of the state. - from Amzon
